Punishment vs Discipline

"Discipline is helping a child solve a problem. Punishment is making a child suffer for having a problem. To raise problem solvers, focus on solutions, not retribution." L.R. Knost

What a powerful statement and certainly one to read over and over till we really absorb its meaning. We know that as adults dealing with children, we must respond rather than react when their cross behavior is showing. And maybe if we really understand the reasoning behind this philosophy, it will help us in that moment of difficulty. Children really do need our help to guide them to good choices and right decisions. We must model the proper behavior for them as well.

There will be challenging times when discipline must be implemented, but with creativity and proper tools, we can reshape trying behaviors. So let's work toward raising problem solvers and solution seekers and recognize our techniques in handling behaviors make a difference in their future.
